Ink Job: First Saturday in May

Jen Mussari’s Custom Lettering for Brooklyn Derby

It’s a Brooklyn Derby tradition to create a special illustration to commemorate each year’s party. We turned to the dynamic Jen Mussari to capture the essence of the event. Not only did she create some beautiful hand lettering, she also made a process video showing how she uses her initial pencil sketches as a basis for inking the final design.

For music, the video features a performance from The DeLorean Sisters, who has performed their signature bluegrass covers of pop hits at the Brooklyn Derby the past couple years.

Up until now, designs have all focused on the number of the event: 7, 8, 9, 10, but for this iteration, we opted for an illustration of our ideal: Living Every Day Like the First Saturday in May.

Scenes from the past (from left to right): James mans the “merch suitcase” filled with the 5th annual design; Jessi talks with Chris on stage while wearing the 6th annual design; Phillip and Anita work the DIY hat table in front of a banner of the 10th annual design.

We think Jen nailed it, and we hope you’ll enjoy seeing how she works. Check out more of Jen’s bona fide style, including a look at her “Burning Down The House” hat from a recent Brooklyn Derby, which she made from model railroad materials!
